Scleral and RGP lens-care guide for keratoconus patients in Oman

This guide is for scleral and rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lens users in Oman, especially people prescribed these lenses to correct vision affected by keratoconus or an irregular cornea.

Prepared and reviewed by: Nasser Alshamli, Master of Clinical Optometry, University of New South Wales; Fellow of IACLE.

Important: This is general educational information and does not replace your eye-care professional's advice or the product instructions. Lens-care products do not treat keratoconus; they are used to clean, store and prepare contact lenses.

Why do scleral and RGP lenses need specific care?

Their materials and designs differ from soft lenses, so their care systems may also differ. Choose products according to your lens type, the manufacturer's instructions and your eye-care professional's advice.

Understanding the different products

1. GP cleaning and storage solutions

Use GP solutions for cleaning, care and storage as directed on the label. Do not assume a soft-lens solution performs the same role. Follow the care system recommended for your lenses.

2. Normal saline for filling scleral lenses

Use the appropriate saline to fill the lens bowl before insertion, as advised by your eye-care professional. Saline does not replace cleaning, disinfection or storage solution.

3. Deep-cleaning solutions

Deep cleaners remove deposits according to the method and time stated on the product label. They do not automatically replace your daily care system. Do not exceed the recommended soaking time or mix products unless instructed.

A daily lens-care routine

  1. Wash and dry your hands before handling lenses.
  2. Use the recommended product; do not substitute based only on a product name or packaging.
  3. Clean, rub and rinse as directed by your eye-care professional and the manufacturer, following the stated timings.
  4. Use fresh solution. Do not top up used solution.
  5. Fill scleral lenses with the liquid recommended by your eye-care professional.
  6. Clean and dry cases and tools, and replace them when needed.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using tap, bottled or distilled water to clean or store lenses.
  • Reusing solution or topping up old solution.
  • Using saline alone in place of cleaning and disinfection.
  • Using a soft-lens solution without confirming that it is suitable.
  • Mixing solutions or transferring them into non-original travel bottles.
  • Continuing to wear lenses when you have pain, redness, discharge or a sudden change in vision.

When to remove your lenses and seek advice

Remove your lenses and contact an eye-care professional if you experience significant pain, persistent redness, severe light sensitivity, discharge, new blurred vision or other vision changes. Do not simply switch solutions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a soft contact lens solution?

Not necessarily. Lens materials and designs vary. Use only a suitable product as recommended by your eye-care professional and stated on its label.

Does saline clean and disinfect lenses?

Saline does not replace cleaning and disinfection. It is commonly used to fill scleral lenses before wear, following professional advice.

How often should I use a deep cleaner?

This depends on the product, lens type and deposits. Follow the product label and your eye-care professional's advice; do not overuse it.

Do these products treat keratoconus?

No. They help keep lenses clean and prepare them for use. Keratoconus assessment, treatment and follow-up require an eye-care professional.

Do you deliver across Oman?

Yes. Delivery is available across Oman's regions, with collection options as shown at checkout.
